Q

A 1.2 kg block and a 1.8 kg block are initially at rest on a frictionless, horizontal surface. When a compressed spring between the blocks is released, the 1.8 kg block moves to the right at 2 m/s as shown in the above figure. What is the speed of 1.2 kg block after the spring is released?

The given answer is actually 3 m/s....

Hi Anisha, does this question have data like compression and spring constant?
1 year, 11 months ago Anisha Banerjee
no...no other data than this...
1 year, 11 months ago Anisha Banerjee
It seems to be as simple as ratio and proportion......may be they gave the wrong answer...
1 year, 11 months ago Rishi Ranjan Shrivastava
Ratio and proportion...maybe, but I think you'll get a nearest answer on this question, not the exact one! Was this an MCQ?
1 year, 11 months ago Anisha Banerjee
Yes its an MCQ...the option were..1.4, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.6(m/s).
1 year, 11 months ago Rishi Ranjan Shrivastava
yeah, it'll be 3, since, its more than 2, as its root 6 and it can't be 3.6(as its too large!) But if you do get a better way of solving this, do tell me!

oops, cookie error! so in which school do you study? and in which class?
1 year, 11 months ago Anisha Banerjee
I'm in Bandel actually....thts near Kolkata..my bro studies thr...and I study in Auxilium,...class 9...
1 year, 11 months ago Rishi Ranjan Shrivastava
Oh. Auxilium Convent! All my cousin sisters studied there, although in Auxilium Convent, Kolkata. So, how did you come to know about Notemonk?

Oh, so how have you been finding Notemonk? Isn't it helpful? Any other ways in which we can better your learning experience on the site?
1 year, 11 months ago Anisha Banerjee
You can invite students to make tests......
1 year, 11 months ago Rishi Ranjan Shrivastava
Yeah, some of us students have suggested a questions corner which does allow students to simulate a test environment albeit with all solved questions. This feature may come in the next release, the admins will see to it, don't worry!

Notemonk is really helpful...especially because of the uploaded books and videos..Hats off.. :)

So, what are your future plans? Which line of study do you want to pursue?
1 year, 11 months ago Anisha Banerjee
If I take Medical..I will jst be extending my family's ''legacy'', if Engineering..I will become lazy...so I don't know...:)
1 year, 11 months ago Rishi Ranjan Shrivastava
oh, so you come from a family of doctors... I'll be joining medical college soon, though I belong to a family of lawyers... As far as engineering is concerned, Mathematics has never really been my thing, so... Well good luck!

Thnx, and same to you....:)

Anisha, We definitely plan to add online tests as a feature in the near future. In the meantime we are making the current site more stable. Thanks for your participation.

Sorry, but i cant see any picture. By the way, u can use conservation of energy for solving this problem.. spring constant 0.5 compression^2 = total K.E. of the two blocks
