Notes for Points

The total number of points that you have earned is a measure of your contribution towards the Notemonk Community. The more you contribute, the more points you earn. It is as simple as that.

How many points do I have now?

When you are logged into Notemonk, look at the top of the page and you will see your points and your level listed next to your name.

Eg: Wild Monkey(1), 2/10

This shows that you are the "Wild Monkey" level (The primary level on Notemonk). The "(1)" indicates the level number. 2 is the total points you have accumulated over time. The number after the slash i.e. 10 is the number of points you have to reach to move to the next level.

What are levels?

As you accumulate points, Notemonk promotes you to higher levels. A higher level showcases to the rest of the community your significance in the community and serves to highlight the magnitude of your contributions.

How many levels are there and what are they?

How can I earn points?

Notemonk awards you points when someone else in the Notemonk Community likes what you did.

Eg: Consider this chain of events

  1. Someone asks a question
  2. You write a great answer for it
  3. Someone (could be the question poster) reads your answer and thinks it is great.
  4. They "Like" your answer by clicking on the "Thumbs-Up" button.
  5. You get a point. The interesting tidbit is that they also get a point!

The same applies for the following activities on Notemonk

  1. Asking questions, Identifying good and bad questions and rating them accordingly.
  2. Answering questions, Identifying good and bad answers and rating them accordingly.
  3. Writing Notes, Identifying good and bad notes and rating them accordingly.
  4. Adding Videos, Identifying good and bad videos and rating them accordingly.
  5. Adding books, Identifying good and bad books and rating them accordingly.
  6. Inviting friends. You get points whenever they change levels.
  7. Identifying great community members by rating them.

Notemonk is working on finding more avenues to reward you as a recognition of your efforts.

Inside the Points system

Notemonk designed the points scoring system to efficiently pick the right people like you and showcase you as the front-runners of the Notemonk Community. However there are always a few Naughty Monkeys out there on the internet who are spoil sports. They post spam and try to gain more points to fool people into thinking they are contributing. The points scoring system is an intricate beast. For using Notemonk in general, you do need to know all the details about the system. However, read the following to understand what makes it all tick.

Some simple facts:

  1. Points are through rating stuff. Which means
    1. You do not get points for adding things (like Questions, Answers etc); atleast not right away.
    2. However, note that when you add anything (eg: A question), you also automatically rate it with a "Thumbs-Up". In other words you are the first person to like your own additions.
  2. Notemonk keeps track of how many ratings (Likes or Dislikes) an item got (eg: Answer)
  3. Notemonk awards points to raters of an item when the total number of ratings for that item reach a certain number - A Rating Level. There are many rating levels for items.

What are the Rating Levels?

Each ratings level is defined by when it happens. The ratings level are as follows:

  1. 2 ratings
  2. 10 ratings
  3. 50 ratings
  4. 100 ratings
  5. 1000 ratings
  6. 10,000 ratings
  7. 100,000 ratings
  8. 1,000,000 ratings
  9. And so on :)

Is it true that I can lose points too and go to a lower level?

The points system has been designed to be generous to true contributors like you. Even if you lose a point here and there, do not sweat - Remember that the system was designed to favour people like you.

User's who are consistently "naughty" and post spam and do other undesirable activities will be penalized. When that happens they will lose points and drop down the level ladder.

I have done some activity on the site but have not received points yet.

Remember that you will automatically get points when someone comes along and likes your stuff. Don't worry, you will be notified by mail as soon as you get points.
